By Mandulee Mendis
Dementia Friendly Programme was launched by the Founder of Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation Lorraine Yu on September 1, 2015 at Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation, Colombo 10. Where Lanka Alzheimer Foundation began its annual World Alzheimer Month celebrations.
Dementia Friendly Programme is an initiative to develop and create friendly communities. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia. Due to the lack of awareness of the disease, it is passed on out of ignorance and neglect. Therefore awareness of dementia is a necessity. According to Lorraine Yu this programme creates greater awareness and facilitates friendly communities to those who are suffering from dementia. Improvement of quality of life of those suffering from dementia is one main aim of the programme.
Dementia – friendly sticker will be given to partner organisations like police stations, hospitals, pharmacies, supermarkets etc. In symbolizing this deed, the Maradana Police Station and some
other organizations were awarded stickers.
Lanka Alzheimer’s Foundation in celebrating World Alzheimer’s Month organized a myriad awareness programmes and fundraising activities.
