Senkadagala

Senkadagalapura or the historic city of Kandy has by far become a popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka. Sitting at the heart of this land of historical and religious significance is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic locally referred to as the ‘Sri Dalada Maligawa’. Kandy has been the central location for many rebellions and victories of the bygone eras, thus embedding its significance in every nook and corner of the city. Today, one could see various buildings inspired by colonial architecture with a touch of modernity in the surrounds.
While on a recent visit to Kandy, the LW team visited the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, exploring its various sections, rituals and ceremonies.

History

Princess Hemamala and Prince Danta, the two great beings who brought down the Sacred Tooth Relic from King Guhaseeva of the State of Kalinga. This Sacred milestone in the Buddhist calendar took place during the reign of King Kirthi Sri Meghavarna. Although it was firstly taken to the Anuradhapura Kingdom, the Tooth Relic moved to different kingdoms before it finally resided at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.
