Everyone speaks of Mothers’ Day, but a very few people know the roots of it. How exactly did Mothers’ Day come into being?

Mothering Sunday

The roots of Mothers’ Day goes a long way back. The celebration of motherhood goes back to the period of ancient Greeks and Romans. They worshiped the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele and celebrated them with festivals. ‘Mothering Sunday’ celebrated by Christians in the fourth week of Lent reminded people to turn towards the closest mother church. With time, people used to give flowers and tokens of appreciation to mothers on this day. But this was only a practice, and not an officially declared day for mothers.
