Last month we discussed how to start your journey into gardening. We delivered some suggestions from an expert gardener, Mr. Indika Jayasinghe. He has more than 18 years’ of experience in commercial agriculture. He caters to both local and international clients in supplying decorative plants, fruits, vegetables and even decorative leaves.

So this month, we will discuss how to plant a vegetable garden in your minimal space. Choose a very small plot of land. Since you are a newbie, it is difficult to keep up with a 20 x 20 feet plot filled with weed. So start with a 10 x 10 feet land plot. If 10 x 10 feet seems intimidating, you can go smaller or consider growing vegetables in 10 containers. Think about your dietary needs. Rather than planting salad leaves, which you don’t eat on a daily basis, try to plant some beans, karapincha, rampe, spinach, kankun, gotukola, mukunuwanna or even some tomatoes or chilies. Tomatoes would easily blossom with our climate, but will require close observation. Choose a location near your front door for your very first vegetable garden. If you have a vegetable plot at the back of your house and you usually don’t go, there- maybe reconsider the location.
